Extra Virgin Olive Oil & Obesity

In the Western world, obesity has become a major problem. People eat large amounts of food, and get very little physical exercise. Citizens have adopted a sedentary and stressful lifestyle, leading to more than half of the population in some industrialized countries being overweight. Such lifestyle promotes a high risk of high blood pressure, diabetes, and high cholesterol, which contributes to the development of cardiovascular diseases.

What is obesity?

Obesity occurs when energy reserves, mainly from fat, are excessive. That happens when the intake of energy through diet is greater than the energy used. It can be counteracted using greater energy ( physical exercise, etc ) through different activities than the energy obtained by diet.

Extra Virgin Olive Oil & Obesity

Extra virgin olive oil, is a nutrient of very high biological components and benefits. Like other fats and oils, is high in calories. However, that does not mean it contributes to obesity. On the contrary, studies have shown that among Mediterranean people, who are the most olive oil consumers in the world by a great amount, there is much less obesity.

Studies prove that diets rich in olive oil lead to greater, long-lasting weight loss – even more than a diet low in fat does.

Plus, olive oil adds taste to healthier foods like vegetables, promoting healthy eating.
