Extra Virgin Olive Oil & Cancer

Cancer acts as one of the leading causes of death in well-developed countries, and deaths due to cancer continue to increase.

Researchers have now discovered a close relationship between diet and the likelihood of the formation of a large number of malignant tumors. The more susceptible a cell is to receiving oxygen, the more that cell is at risk of becoming cancerous.

Colon-rectal, prostate and breast cancer are the three types of cancer mostly associated with dietary habits.

The type of fat we ingest seems to have more to do with cancer than the quantity of fat we ingest.

What is Cancer?

Cancer starts when a tumor – abnormal enlargement or swelling of a part of body tissue – forms. There are two types of tumors: benign and malignant. Benign tumors rarely cause death.

Malignant tumors, or cancer tumors, invade tissue. With time, they enter the bloodstream through the lymphatic system, which can form more tumors as they metastasize. The rate at which this occurs depends on the type of tumor involved. Other factors like environmental and genetic are at play as well.

Extra Virgin Olive Oil & Cancer

Recent Epidemiological studies have concluded that extra virgin olive oil protectively defends the body against certain types of malignant tumors, including prostate, breast, endometrium and digestive tract tumors among others.

Several studies have shown the ingesting extra virgin olive oil reduces the risk of one developing breast cancer. A diet with extra virgin olive oil serving as the primary source of fat has the capability of considerably lowering the risk of developing cancer. This is because cell mutations that cancer causes occur because of toxins, taken in through diet, that attack DNA. The vitamins and antioxidants, that are found in extra virgin olive oil, work to fight against these toxins.

People with diets rich in extra virgin olive oil also report a reduced risk of developing cancer of the bowels or colon cancer.

Current research is focusing on how extra virgin olive oil works to protect people against cancers like Colon. The researchers focus was the implications of the fats we consume, and specifically the protective capacity of extra virgin olive oil in liver disease among others. The results conclude to the beneficial effect of extra virgin olive oil on pre-cancerous diseases. After several analysis with different types of diets, researchers concluded that extra virgin olive oil not only reduced the cancerous disease but also the number of tumors developed was significantly low and much less aggressive, therefore had better prognostication and outcome.

Much of the beneficial effects are believed to be associated to oleic acid which is the principal monosaturated fatty acid in extra virgin olive oil. This fatty acid plays a remarkable role into lowering the production of prostaglandins which are responsible for production and development of tumors.

It is also known that the other components of extra virgin olive oil, such as antioxidants, flavonoids, polyphenols and squalene also have an exceptional positive influence, for example squalene is known to reduce the occurrence of melanomas.

Currently, very promising studies are focused on the protection of extra virgin olive oil against child leukemia and other cancers such esophageal squamous cell cancer.

Much has still needs to be learned about how extra virgin olive oil affects cancers. However, based on the information available at this point, regardless the stage of a cancer, extra virgin olive oil acts in great benefit in fighting against it.
